Abstract

Abstract

Metal casting is the process of making objects by melting metal and pouring the liquid into the mold cavity. This process can be done using a furnace. Melting furnace is a device used to melt metal. This research aims to make and test a furnace that uses coconut shell as fuel, this furnace is designed to melt aluminum. The manufacturing process is carried out by several processes such as cutting, rolling, welding and turning. after the manufacturing process is complete, the furnace testing process is carried out. In this testing process, measurements are made with a thermocouple to determine the temperature changes that occur during the process. The results of the furnace test showed that each component of the manufacture could work properly (capable of processing) and was able to withstand temperatures up to 9000 C without changing shape. The results of the calculation from the test data show that the furnace requires heat of 4564.96 kJ to melt 4.3 kg of aluminum material by actually spending 35 minutes and 31.44 minutes in calculations, and the efficiency of the furnace reaches 49%. This furnace is expected to be used as a learning tool for students in non-ferrous metal casting techniques, especially aluminum.
